There was a smell at the initial start up which others have noted but it was insignificant after about 3 hours of use. The smell results from a chemical which they use to prevent the metal from rusting during shipping. At high heat this chemical burns off and there is an unpleasent odor that comes off. Yes, if you read the manual it tells you to run it on high outside or in ventilated room for 2 hours to burn the smell off, after this mine has no more smell.
