Editorial Review: Discount Shopping essential video: Some people may sneer at this 1965 musical, but the truth is the film has earned its status as a perennially watchable romantic-drama, largely on the strength of a fun story and chemistry between stars Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. Veteran filmmaker Robert Wise (The Day the Earth Stood Still) mostly stays out of the way of the film's appealing elements, which include a based-on-fact tale of Austria's von Trapp family, who fled their Nazi-occupied country in 1938. Andrews is delightful and even fascinating as Maria, who sheds her tomboyish ways as a novice nun to accept the mantle of adulthood, becoming matron of the motherless von Trapp clan. Plummer is matinee-idol handsome and gives a smart performance to boot, and the cast of young people and kids who make up the singing von Trapp children make a strong impression. Based on the Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical, the score includes such winners as "Maria" and the future John Coltrane hit "My Favorite Things." --Tom Keogh Average Rating:
 Rating:  - Tremendous DVDThis is a wonderful two-disc edition. I only owned this movie on two videos so you can just imagine the excitement I had getting all the extras that went with this! It is so worth owning and the price is wonderful for such a treasure. It gives great background and is most enjoyable to see all the kids in the movie as grown ups and to also hear Julie Andrews speaking with Christopher Plummer. A true winner! Rating: - Wonderful MovieIt was a great family night movie. Both my 8 year old and 4 year old enjoyed it. Very different from the usual movie night movies and a welcome change. Very long for the younger one - he fell asleep and woke up a couple times but well worth the price for this classic. Rating: - Classic Feel-Good MovieIt is so nice to be able to go back to those good feelings experienced during childhood. With a new perspective and appreciation for these movie I found myself singing along through the movie and caught myself smiling more than once.
